ASTM A213, A249, A269 and A312 Explained: Which Stainless Steel Tube Standard to Order

Four ASTM specifications cover most stainless steel tube and pipe orders. Picking the right one avoids rejected material and inspection delays.

At a glance

StandardProductTypeTypical use
ASTM A213Boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes (ferritic and austenitic alloy steel)SeamlessBoilers, superheaters, heat exchangers
ASTM A249Boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger and condenser tubes (austenitic steel)WeldedHeat exchangers, condensers
ASTM A269Tubing for general service (austenitic stainless steel)Seamless and weldedInstrumentation, general process tubing
ASTM A312Pipe (austenitic stainless steel)Seamless, welded, heavily cold workedProcess and utility piping

How to choose

  • Boiler or heat-exchanger duty with seamless tube: A213.
  • Same duty but welded tube is acceptable: A249.
  • General-service stainless tubing: A269.
  • Pipe sized by NPS and schedule: A312.

Other standards you may see

European (EN), German (DIN) and Japanese (JIS) tube standards are used on many export projects. Ruby Infra Projects lists seamless tubes to ASTM A213/A249/A269/A312 and EN/DIN/JIS standards.

Include these on your enquiry

Standard and edition, grade (for example TP304L or TP316L), outside diameter, wall thickness, length, quantity, supply condition (annealed and pickled), tolerances and the test certificate type. Send your requirement and see 304 vs 316 and seamless vs welded for grade and process guidance.
