In coal-fired boilers, fast-moving fly ash wears away the outer surface of superheater, reheater and economiser tubes. A boiler tube protection shield is a sacrificial stainless steel cover that takes this wear, so tube leaks and forced outages are avoided and the shield — not the pressure part — is what you replace at the next shutdown.
Ruby Infra Projects manufactures half round tube shields, bend shields, protective sleeves, cassette baffles and pressure-part protection components in every grade (SS 304, 304L, 309, 310, 316, 321 and more) for thermal power stations at its Umbergaon works, to your drawing or sample.
Boiler shields come in several forms. Ruby Infra Projects makes half round tube shields, bend shields, protective sleeves and cassette baffles in every grade; send your drawing or sample for the exact form and size you need.
Formed to follow tube bends and elbows, where gas changes direction and erosion is usually highest.
Wrap the full circumference of a tube at known wear locations along straight runs.
Semi-circular covers over the gas-facing side of tubes in a bank, made in every grade. Half round tube shields →
Replaceable panel units that direct flue gas across tube banks and limit bypass.
Your boiler OEM drawings and inspection history show exactly where shields are needed. Read the full explanation in our boiler shields article →
| Grade | Why choose it | Typical zone |
|---|---|---|
| SS 304 | Good strength and corrosion resistance; economical | Lower-temperature zones |
| SS 310 | About 24–26% Cr and 19–22% Ni: strong oxidation and scaling resistance at very high temperature | Hot gas-path zones |
| 304L, 309, 316, 321 & more | Every grade is made on request | See the half round tube shield grade guide |
Final grade depends on metal and gas temperature at each location; confirm with your boiler engineer.

A boiler tube protection shield is a stainless steel cover fitted over boiler tubes, tube bends or tube banks that are exposed to erosive flue gas. It takes the wear in place of the pressure-part tube, so a worn shield can be replaced during a shutdown instead of the tube itself. The terms tube shield, boiler shield, protection shield, bend shield and protective sleeve are often used for the same family of components.
A tube shield (often half-round) covers the exposed side of a straight tube run. A bend shield is formed to follow a tube bend or elbow, where flow changes direction and erosion is usually highest. A protective sleeve wraps the full circumference of a tube. The right form depends on the tube layout, the gas direction and the clearances in your boiler, so a drawing or a sample is the best starting point. See half round tube shields for more.
They are typically used where fly-ash laden flue gas is fastest or changes direction: economiser and low-temperature superheater tube banks, reheater and superheater bends, tubes near gas-path openings, and zones around soot-blower lanes. Your boiler OEM drawings, inspection history and past tube-leak locations show where shields are needed.
Grade 304 is common where flue-gas and metal temperatures are lower. Grade 310 (about 24–26% chromium and 19–22% nickel) resists oxidation and scaling at much higher temperatures, so it is used in hotter zones. Intermediate grades such as 309 also exist. Ruby Infra Projects makes shields in every grade, including 304, 304L, 309, 310, 316 and 321; confirm the grade for each zone with your boiler engineer or the OEM drawing.
Fixing methods include clamps, straps, interlocking designs and welding, and the choice follows the plant's own boiler engineering and welding-procedure practice because the tubes are pressure parts. Tell the manufacturer which fixing method your plant uses so that the shield is formed and finished to suit it.
